South America is a continent with a chequered yet fascinating history. In the early 1990s, Medellin was the most dangerous city in the world at the heigh of Pablo Escobar’s narco wars. Today it is a vibrant city where you can learn a lot about the suffering of this amazing place during these dark old days. Oh, and it’s near the awesome Guatape.
Peru is a country of many gems. The desert oasis Huacachina, the seals of Paracas, beautiful rainbow mountain, cool Colca Canyon, wonderful cusco, the amazing sacred valley… think I may even have forgotten something… ah yes, Machu Picchu!
Ecuador has the Galapagos Islands, one of the world’s primary attractions for nature lovers. Argentina and Chile share the wonderful mountainous region of Patagonia. Head north to Argentina’s border with Brazil and you will find the spectacular Iguazu falls. Oh, and don’t skip Buenos Aires.
Brazil hosts the Amazon, the Pantanal and Rio de Janeiro, famous for its annual carnival every February.
And we’re yet to talk about wonderful Bolivia with the unique city of La Paz and stunning Uyuni salt flats – one of the most spectacular sights you will ever see.
Hopefully you end up loving this amazing continent as much as I did.
